Iron content in your body can be raised by consuming iron-rich foods. Excellent sources include red meats, eggs, chicken and turkey.  Few foods are fortified with iron, including many breads and cereals. Adding these foods in your diet may help enhance the amount of iron available in your body to convey oxygen efficiently.

If anemia symptoms are result of inadequate vitamin B-12 in your body, one can eat foods rich in vitamin B-12 to have enough of this vitamin to produce healthy red blood cells. Consuming B-12-rich foods such as red meat, shellfish, poultry, dairy products and eggs can increase its level. This vitamin is only present in animal-based foods. Vegetarians and vegans must often take vitamin B-12 supplements to prevent or relieve symptoms of this type of anemia.

It’s important to have plenty of vitamin C because it helps the body to absorb iron from the diet. Sometimes it’s advisable to take iron supplements to speed up the process, but always get medical advice first for children. Never give children adult iron tablets unless your doctor tells you to. Some people also need folic acid supplements.

Foods that are rich in essential nutrients include:

  • Iron – red meat, liver, green vegetables, eggs, dried apricots, sardines, spinach, fortified breakfast cereals, whole meal bread
  • Vitamin B12 – meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, fortified breakfast cereals
  • Folic acid – wheat germ, broccoli, green cabbage, pulses, nuts, yeast extract

  • Red meat (beef, lamb, pork) is rich in iron that is easily absorbed. The darker the meat, the more iron it contains.
  • Poultry contains some iron, and leg meat contains more iron than breast meat.
  • Fish contains some iron too, especially oily fish and molluscs (mussels, etc.)
  • Green leafy vegetables, such as watercress, spinach and kale;
  • Whole grains, especially barley and oats;
  • Peas and beans
  • Seeds and nuts, especially sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, pecans and almonds;
  • Egg yolks.
  • Fruits. Fruits such as iron-rich apples and tomatoes are great to eat when treating anemia. You can either eat apples or tomatoes or drink 100% pure apple and tomato juice to treat anemia. Also fruits that effectively treat anemia are plums, bananas, lemons, grapes, raisins, oranges, figs, carrots and raisins when eaten in large quantities.
  • Honey. Honey is a potent source of iron, copper and manganese. When these elements are combined they aid in hemoglobin synthesis. Honey is therefore a powerful weapon against anemia.
  • Avocadoes.  If you’re tossing a salad for dinner, throw in a few slices of avocado to increase your iron intake.
