”Dirty Dozen” List of Produce Found with the most Pesticides

cropped-fruits.jpgPesticide residues have been tied to health risks, which is why the Environmental Working Group has reviewed USDA and FDA testing data to come up with its eighth annual “Dirty Dozen” list to let consumers know which foods are most commonly contaminated with pesticides. the latest round of government tests found pesticide residues on 68 percent of food samples. EWG says its rankings are based on the pesticide contamination or–lack thereof–in 48 popular fruits and vegetables based on 28,000 samples tested by FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. EWG’s rankings uses six measures of pesticide hazards, among them, the number of pesticides detected on a crop and the percentage of samples testing positive.

Foods on the Dirty Dozen list pose no risks to consumers due to the extremely low levels of pesticides actually detected on those foods,” said Dr. Carl Winter, a Best Food Facts expert who was quoted in the Washington Post. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is essential no matter how they’re grown.” The advice from dietitians is to wash all fruits and veggies under running tap water, then eat up – two to three cups of each per day.

Following Fruits and Vegetables are included in “Dirty Dozen”, strawberries being on the top of the list, spinach and Nectarines trailing behind:-

  • Pears

  • Sweet Bell Peppers

  • Potatoes
